Kenya Puts Academic Certificates on Avalanche Blockchain in Major KNEC Digital Verification Rollout

Kenya is moving academic certificate verification from a process that could take weeks or months to one designed to happen in minutes, with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) now using blockchain technology to secure its digital certificates.

The new KNEC E-Certificate platform allows candidates to access digital copies of their certificates while giving employers, universities, government agencies and other institutions a way to verify academic credentials online.

The system is built on Avalanche, a blockchain network, but students do not need cryptocurrency or a crypto wallet to use it.

A certificate that once depended heavily on manual confirmation from KNEC can now be generated and verified digitally.

KNEC is putting decades of certificates online

Employers, universities and other institutions routinely need to confirm that an academic qualification is genuine before making decisions about a candidate.

Under the traditional process, organisations seeking confirmation of KNEC examination results have had to submit formal requests and supporting documents to the Council.

The E-Certificate platform moves that process online.

KNEC's June 2026 user guide says the system contains certificates dating from 1989 onwards. The live platform currently lists KCSE certificates from 1989 to 2024 as available for download.

Someone who completed KCSE decades ago can therefore potentially access a digital copy through the same platform, provided the relevant record is available in KNEC's database.

The blockchain sits underneath the certificate

The phrase “KNEC certificates are on the blockchain” makes the rollout sound more dramatic than it is.

KNEC's documentation does not say that students' complete academic records have been published publicly on Avalanche. Instead, the Council's user guide says each certificate is anchored to the blockchain using Merkle-tree cryptographic proofs and receives a unique blockchain hash for verification.

The hash acts as a digital fingerprint. Change the certificate and its fingerprint changes too, giving the system a way to detect whether a document has been altered after issuance.

When a certificate is submitted for verification, the system checks the candidate's examination details against KNEC's database and compares the certificate with its blockchain anchor. If the checks succeed, the certificate can be authenticated. Cases that cannot be confirmed can be referred to KNEC.

The blockchain is therefore being used as an integrity layer for the digital certificate, while KNEC's database remains the underlying academic record.

The available KNEC documentation does not establish that complete certificates, names, identification numbers or grades are being stored publicly on Avalanche.

You do not need to know anything about crypto

For a student using the platform, the blockchain is largely invisible.

Candidates register on the portal and verify their identity. Kenyan citizens are required to provide national identification information, which is checked against the Integrated Population Registration System.

To generate a certificate, the applicant enters their examination index number, selects the examination type and provides the examination year.

The KNEC user guide lists the certificate generation fee at KSh1,200, excluding VAT and eCitizen charges. Payment can be made through M-Pesa and other methods supported by eCitizen.

Once payment is confirmed, the certificate is generated as a PDF with a blockchain verification hash.

KNEC says certificates remain available for free re-download through the portal for six months. The certificate itself does not expire, although obtaining another downloadable copy after that period may require a fresh generation and payment.

There is no AVAX payment involved. Students do not need a wallet or a blockchain account.

An employer can check 1,000 certificates in minutes

KNEC's platform allows employers, universities, colleges, professional bodies and government agencies to register as verifier organisations. Approved organisations can submit individual requests or verify certificates in bulk.

For bulk verification, an organisation can submit up to 1,000 certificates in a single request.

The organisation uploads a CSV file containing candidate information alongside a ZIP file containing the certificate PDFs. KNEC's system checks the submissions against its database and the corresponding blockchain anchors.

KNEC estimates that a batch of 1,000 certificates can typically be processed in six to 10 minutes.

The organisation then receives a consolidated report alongside individual reports for each candidate.

For employers hiring hundreds of people or institutions processing large intakes, that could remove a significant amount of manual work from certificate verification.

The system is also aimed at certificate fraud

Academic certificate fraud is not limited to completely fake documents. An authentic certificate can also be altered after it has been issued, with information changed using document-editing tools.

The blockchain anchor gives KNEC another way to identify such changes.

If an issued certificate is modified, the resulting hash should no longer match the original blockchain record. A verifier can use that difference as a signal that the document has been altered.

That does not make academic fraud impossible. Blockchain cannot determine whether the original information in KNEC's database was correct, and it cannot prevent someone from impersonating another person or building a fake website.

It does, however, make it harder to alter a certificate without leaving evidence that something has changed.

KNEC has also been introducing QR-based verification for newer certificates. A May 2026 report from the Kenya News Agency said the Council was using QR codes and digital verification to allow employers and universities to authenticate certificates more quickly.

There is one catch for the 2025 KCSE cohort

The live KNEC platform currently lists KCSE certificates from 1989 to 2024 as available for download. Information associated with the rollout has indicated that 2025 certificates would also be brought onto the platform.

That leaves a discrepancy between the rollout information and what is currently visible on the public platform.

The system may still be undergoing a phased rollout, or the public availability information may not yet reflect the full set of records.

Candidates should check the live KNEC E-Certificate platform to confirm whether their examination year is available.

Blockchain cannot fix a bad academic record

KNEC remains responsible for the examination record itself.

If a candidate's name is wrong, examination information contains an error or a record is disputed, putting a hash on a blockchain does not resolve the underlying problem.

The blockchain can help prove that a digital certificate has not been altered since it was anchored. It cannot prove that KNEC's original record was correct.

The technology is therefore one part of a larger verification system. The platform still needs to reliably deliver certificates and give institutions a way to resolve cases that cannot be confirmed automatically.

What Kenya is actually doing with blockchain

Blockchain discussions in Kenya have often centred on cryptocurrency, digital assets and speculation.

KNEC's implementation puts the technology somewhere much less familiar: behind a government service that people already use.

There is no token for students to buy and no crypto transaction to complete. The blockchain is being used to help verify the integrity of a digital academic certificate.

For most Kenyans, Avalanche will be invisible.

The part they will notice is whether a certificate that once took weeks to verify can now be authenticated in minutes.
